Accident victims with concussions deserve significant compensation
The powerful force of a car accident, semi-truck collision, or even a bad trip and fall can often result in concussions for the injured victim.
Although this type of brain damage is among the most common reasons for emergency hospital visits, public knowledge is lacking regarding what a concussion is and how to identify its symptoms. In one survey, 9 out of 10 adults could not properly define what a concussion is.
Concussions are too often not treated with the seriousness these injuries deserve. Some people think you can "walk off" or "shake off" a concussion. Even in the medical field, concussions are known as "mild" Traumatic Brain Injuries (mTBIs).
At Vishno Law Firm, we know that "mild" is a relative term. There is no such thing as a minor brain injury. Any reduction in brain function is a major loss. When concussions are the result of someone else's negligence, our established Fairfield County personal injury law firm holds them accountable.
Concussions are serious injuries
To help the community better understand concussions and their symptoms, this September, Vishno Law Firm is participating in National Concussion Awareness Day.
The following is general information about concussions and how to identify the signs and symptoms of this common TBI. If you think you may have a concussion, see a trusted medical professional. What is a concussion?
Concussions are a form of brain damage usually caused by blunt force trauma. Car accidents, falls, work accidents, and sports are among the leading causes of concussions.
In a car accident, the brain can get knocked around, bounced, and/or twisted inside the skull. This causes stretching, bruising, and tearing of brain tissues.
Concussions can range in severity from mild to severe. If left untreated, concussions can cause long-term damage or worsen and become life-threatening.
What are concussion signs and symptoms?
Concussion symptoms are broad. This type of damage has the potential to alter an injured person's thinking, feelings, sleep, and physical health, among other things. Concussion symptoms and signs include:
Sensitivity to light.
Instability and lack of balance.
Low energy and drowsiness.
Headaches.
Sickness or vomiting.
Distorted vision.
Being cloudy and having problems thinking clearly.
Memory issues.
Sadness, increased irritation, and anxiety.
Difficulties sleeping.
Concussion symptoms may continue for two weeks or longer, though most go away within 6-10 days. If symptoms persist for 3-6 months, an injured person may have Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS).
Are all concussions the same?
There are a handful of concussion types. Each causes varied damage and calls for a course of action tailored to the particular needs of the accident victim. Concussions are categorized by the effect they have on the injured person. Types of concussions include:
Cognitive/fatigue concussion - Impairs performance on lengthy or difficult jobs. Long days can be extremely exhausting.
Vestibular concussions - These are characterized by dizziness, loss of balance, motion sickness, and vision problems.
Ocular concussion – This kind of TBI impairs eye coordination and makes it challenging to perform visual tasks, such as reading and staring at computer screens.
Cervical concussion – Caused by stress on or compressing the neck, spine, or spinal cord. This concussion type may result in severe headaches.
Anxiety/emotional concussion – This concussion can alter your personality and the way your brain works. For instance, a person who was once outgoing may start to feel paralyzed by anxiety. Anxiety can make social relationships difficult.
